Midnight Mania! Bones Claims DC Won’t Cut to 205 Again

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Jon Jones openly admitted he won’t move to heavyweight to fight Daniel Cormier because he doesn’t think it is worth the risk. He still considers himself a natural light heavyweight, and a Daniel Cormier who doesn’t cut weight clearly hits harder and, in Jones’ mind, would have a strength advantage.

However, Jones also doesn’t think his greatest rival is ever coming back down to light heavyweight either, despite what Cormier says. Via MMAJunkie.com:

He’s definitely never coming back to light heavyweight,” Jones said. “He says it, but there’s no way he’s coming back to light heavyweight. To commit your life to lose that type of weight and to come up short again would be so devastating. It would take an incredible amount of courage to attempt it, and to come up short would just be so devastating. I doubt he’d put himself through that for a third time.

Jones is right on all counts. There is no reason to make a third fight between the two at light heavyweight. We’ve seen the outcome twice now, and without the additional KO power being at heavyweight affords DC, there is little reason to think it would go differently on another attempt. Cormier has in many ways been able to put the rivalry behind him by knocking out Stipe Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight belt, which he will defend in a rematch with Stipe at UFC 241 in August. Cormier has nothing to gain by making that brutal cut again, and Jones evidently won’t accept the risk of fighting him at heavyweight.

It won’t be, given the nature of fighting and fight talk, but that should be the last we hear about this.

Why would you treat a demonstration partner like this?

You know when you just want to see someone succeed so badly?
