Ngannou Reacts To Dos Santos Win, Dos Santos Responds
Saturday night’s UFC Wichita event on ESPN+ featured a main event with big repercussions for the heavyweight division. Junior dos Santos and Derrick Lewis went to war over two rounds, with both men getting their heavy shots in. But it was dos Santos who emerged victorious, hurting Lewis badly with a spinning kick to the gut and finishing him in the second with a barrage of punches (watch the finish here).
That puts dos Santos on a three fight win streak since his return to action after a USADA suspension that was ultimately overturned due to tainted supplements. That suspension also resulted in the cancellation of a fight between Junior and fellow heavy hitter Francis Ngannou at UFC 215, and it seems clear that both men are keeping close eyes on each other.
After the dos Santos win, Ngannou threw up a thoughtful emoji on Twitter:
As for dos Santos, he was asked about a potential re-booking against “The Predator,” and he sounded interested.
“I think that would be great,” Dos Santos said (via MMA Junkie). “It should’ve happened in the past, but because of something weird it didn’t happen. Maybe now it can happen.”
It would have to wait a little bit, though. For all of dos Santos’ talk about staying active, he’s got a pressing family matter to attend to before he can return to action.
“Right now I need a break,” he said. “I need to stay active that’s the most important thing right now. Before my career comes my family. My daughter is born in May. I need to get ready to receive her. … I’ll fight again maybe at the end of August.”
With champ Daniel Cormier seemingly intent on waiting to see whether Brock Lesnar returns to the UFC in 2019, it could be a while before anyone gets another shot at the heavyweight strap. What do you think, Maniacs? Is Junior dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou a heavyweight showdown worth waiting six months for?
