Jones says Anthony Smith has his ‘full, undivided attention’
Jon Jones will not be underestimating Anthony Smith at UFC 235.
Jon Jones is the massive betting favorite heading into his light heavyweight title defense against Anthony Smith at UFC 235, and the Jackson-Wink product is taking measures to ensure he doesn’t underestimate ‘Lionheart.’
Despite being the underdog, Smith has almost double the experience of Jones and is one of the most seasoned veterans in the game.
This, Jones says, is why he is taking Smith ‘very seriously’ in preparation for UFC 235.
“It’s flattering, but at the end of the day it’s a very dangerous position to be in,” Jones said at the UFC 235 press conference in Las Vegas (transcript via MMAjunkie). “When you are fighting a guy no one expects to win as the favorite you have to be smart enough and mature enough to stay at the drawing board, stay in practice, take your opponent very seriously. I take Anthony Smith extremely serious. He has 40 fights, double the fights I have. He’ll get my full, undivided attention.”
Smith, 30, is also on a three-fight win streak, earning stoppage victories over Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua and Volkan Oezdemir in the last year.
Jones, meanwhile, will look to defend his light heavyweight title for the first time in over four years. The former pound-for-pound No. 1 has been unable to accumulate a title streak due to a slew of failed drug tests.
UFC 235: Jones vs. Smith takes place next month, March 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
