Bellator MMA Announces New U.K. Television Deal
Bellator Newcastle: “Pitbull vs. Scope” takes place this Saturday night (Feb. 9, 2019) at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The local start time for the main card is 10 p.m. GMT, while U.S. viewers can enjoy the fights live at 5 p.m. ET via Bellator.com.
Bellator Europe was kicked off last July when Bellator signed 24 new fighters to fill out the roster, then developed further when David Green was hired to lead Bellator’s European division. That all culminated in the Bellator Newcastle card, which will kick off the series on Saturday night.
In addition, Bellator recently announced that a new partner will carry the fights for United Kingdom fight fans. Channel 5 will hold exclusive rights to a minimum of six United Kingdom- and European-based fight cards, which guarantees the six shows planned (five yet to be announced) will all be broadcast live in local time. Paul Dunthorne, COO for Channel 5, had this to say:
“We are partnering with an exciting brand and it is great news for our viewers who will be able to watch some of the biggest names in the sport compete live on free to air TV. Bellator brings the very best fight cards to Europe and we are excited to be able to bring our viewers closer to all of the drama and excitement that we know it will deliver.”
The aforementioned David Green also had a few remarks at a recent press conference:
“Channel 5 is the perfect platform for us to expand the popularity and customer reach of MMA in the UK and I believe they are a great match for our brand. They already have an engaged audience who are committed to the sport and that dedicated fan base will help us grow here in the UK as we continue to create household names.”
