Morning Report: Instead of title fight, Kamaru Usman wants Colby Covington next: ‘I’ve got to bless this dude with my hands’
At The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale, Kamaru Usman definitively declared himself as a true contender in the UFC welterweight division, dominating former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos en route to his ninth straight victory inside the octagon. Afterwards, UFC president Dana White said that he wanted to see Usman challenge Tyron Woodley for the 170-pound belt next, but it appears Usman has another idea.
“I’m gonna go out there and knock out Colby Covington,” Usman said.” That right now is the fight. The UFC just called and they offered us the fight. They said Colby Covington in January and you know what I’m gonna do. Of course I accepted. For the fifth time, I’ve accepted the fight. Right now we’re just waiting on him.”
One problem though: Covington is presumed to have the next title shot at welterweight. “Chaos” has emerged as a contender in the last few years based off his trash talking as much as his in-cage success. Covington’s new, brash personality helped earn him an interim title shot against dos Anjos in June, a fight Covington won much like Usman did on Saturday. Covington was then stripped of his title shortly afterwards when he couldn’t make a quick turnaround against Woodley due to injury. Still, Woodley has made it clear he wishes to face Covington next. Because of that, Usman is convinced Covington will duck him but if he had his druthers, “The Nigerian Nightmare” would be haunting Covington’s dreams next.
“There comes a time where what we do in our careers where we get that one guy, that guy that just makes your blood boil, that really pulls the real savage out of you,” Usman said. “I have to touch him. I have to. I’ve got to bless this dude with my hands. I’ve got to bless him. It’ll be a little sour taste in my mouth to win the belt, win multiple times, and then retire knowing I didn’t put my hands on this dude.”
But just because he’s focused on Covington right now, that doesn’t mean Woodley is safe. Usman delivered a parting shot to “The Chosen One”, saying that after he took care of Covington for him, he’d come calling for the welterweight title.
“I’m gonna go out there and do Tyron’s dirty work because I understand Tyron don’t want to have to fight both of us,” Usman concluded. “He wants to sit back, keep getting them big checks that y’all get over there at TMZ, so it is what it is. Don’t worry T, I’m gonna go out there and do the dirty work and after that, we gonna have to talk.”
