‘Rumble’ wants MMA return at heavyweight vs. Jon Jones

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is planning to come out of retirement, but it comes with a caveat.

With a loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 in April of the past year, Anthony Johnson decided to hang up his gloves at 33 years of age. Since then, “Rumble” has been involved in other endeavors outside of fighting.

But like how we’ve seen it time and time again, fighter retirements are often temporary, especially for those like Johnson who are still relatively young. True enough, the two-time light heavyweight title contender does have that itch to return, but it comes with one condition that involves Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

Johnson made his declaration in an Instagram story that was captured by MMA Fighting.

Yes, it’s true that I’ll come back at heavyweight, but only if Jon fights DC for the title! It’s a personal goal of mine to fight the very best of the best before I truly stop fighting. Jon was always my motivation once I went to 205. Heavyweight would be insane if the three of us were at it again!

Jones and Johnson were originally slated to face each other for the 205-pound title at UFC 187 in May 2015. But due to Jones’ hit-and-run mishap involving a pregnant woman and a marijuana pipe, “Rumble” was instead slated to face Cormier, whom he lost to via third-round submission. A rematch at UFC 210 led to a second-round submission loss, after which he announced his retirement.
