Chad Mendes vs. Alex Volkanovski added to UFC 232
Featherweight prospect Alex Volkanovski is getting a massive step up in competition at UFC 232, as he takes on Chad Mendes.
A pivotal featherweight clash is on tap for UFC 232 on December 29th.
UFC officials announced on Tuesday that two-time title challenger Chad Mendes will face rising Australian standout Alex Volkanovski on the promotion’s year-end pay-per-view event. There’s no word on whether or not it’ll be on the main card or preliminary card.
Mendes (18-4) returned from his two-year USADA suspension this past July, impressively knocking out Myles Jury in the first-round of their UFC Boise encounter. It was Mendes’ first win since he finished Ricardo Lamas in April 2015. After that first-round TKO, “Money” lost on short notice to Conor McGregor, then was knocked out by Frankie Edgar before testing positive for the banned substance GHRP-6, a growth hormone.
Volkanovski (18-1) is a perfect 5-0 in the UFC and currently on a 15-fight winning streak. The 30-year-old former rugby player dominated the notoriously tough Darren Elkins, also at UFC Boise, to pick up the biggest win of his career. His other appearance in 2018 saw him wreck Jeremy Kennedy with ground-and-pound to score a TKO stoppage. Volkanovski is ranked #11 in the UFC’s featherweight division, whereas Mendes is #5, so Alex stands to gain significantly if he prevails this December.
UFC 232 features a pair of championship bouts, with Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson vying for the light heavyweight title in the main event, while women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg takes on women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in the co-main event.
